Artist Talk with Bryan Valenza

1.Tell us a little About yourself.

I was born, February 15, 1992 in Jakarta, Indonesia.  I studied Visual Communication Design at Institut Teknologi Nasional in 2010.  I booked my first comic book gig in 2011 when a Comic Studio in Bandung hired me as a freelance Comic book Colorist and Illustrator.

2.Describe your style.

I have 2 kind of styles for lineart, it’s the clean one and sometimes it kinda rough. But I use the same brush, it’s pencil tool in photoshop actually. It gives the effect of sharpness on my drawing and I like that way. For coloring, I use many different style but I focusing myself to my color palette. It gives characteristic and identity to my artwork.

3.What tools do you find yourself most the time?

I use digital tools almost 100% all the time.

4.What got you into digital art?

Well for me, to be honest it save a lot of time and money LOL. But I did a traditional art too sometimes for refreshing.

5.What got you into comics?

I read comics since I was a kid. Become part of the industry is a thing I always dream of.

Let’s take it from the comics, yes? Well my all time favorite comic books are Civil War, Spider-verse and Batman: the dark knight returns.

9.What tips would you give to a beginner artist?

I don’t have any specific tips. All I can say is focus on your passion, practice harder than anyone else, and believe yourself.

10.What message do you want people to get from your work?

Like other artists, I want to share my thoughts, my aspirations, my feelings to the people through my work. We visual people didn’t talk too much, we act and use visual language to communicate the unspeakable.

11.What makes your style different from everyone else?

I’m focusing myself as a colorist. So what makes my style different is my coloring technique and the color palette itself.
