Artist Talk With Kory Cromie

1.Tell us a little About yourself.

I’m scruffy looking guy from Toronto named Kory Cromie. I grew up drawing boats catching on fire and houses with monster truck wheels on them, which worried my parents from time to time. Then I attended Seneca colleges animation art program to become a professional animator. However I ended up leaning towards game art and started making artwork primarily for game companies after I graduated in 2011.Currently I work for Big Blue Bubble, a game development company in London Ontario Canada. Where I have making artwork mainly for the games My Singing Monsters and its prequel My Singing Monsters Dawn of Fire.

2.Describe your style.

I don’t really seem to have one to describe. I am actually struggling right now with how I should be developing my artwork. Some people have brought up Masamune shirow and Tim Burton. So maybe it is a cross of those two at the moment.

3.What is your inspiration?

Everything from 80’s robot drawings to food. More recently I have been taking inspiration from graphic design to create more striking images. I also get inspired by other artists when I participate with various online communities, like Artstation and Polycount.

4.What do you do when you have creative block?

Going through animation school taught me to hammer through blocks by just working continuously. Because I learned there that even if things are not working out at first.I your muse often comes back to see what you are doing when you work without it.Though on occasion taking a short break to have some tea and go through some of the books in my growing art book collection can help me a lot too.

5.What is your favorite work from another artist?

Aleksandr Petrovs animation of The old Man and the Sea. It is my favorite for not just being beautifully animated, but for it being beautifully animated in OIL PAINT. While some artists are on another level Aleksandr is on another planet by the looks of it.

6.What tips would you give to a beginner artist?

Seriously make sure you’re having fun first.Fun is what has helped me stick to art for so many years and also why I made art into a career. Other stuff comes later, like fundamentals and learning how to work with modern methods, but the fun of making art in the first place is what helped me muscle through learning how to refine it. Of course I could be wrong about this, I’m not the smartest person in the world. Something I realized painfully when I was 11 years old and with my head stuck in a mailbox. But from what I have experienced it seems to be a very important thing. Keep a sketchbook too by the way.

7.What message do you want people to get from your work?

Just enjoy yourself. It is okay to chill out right now. That is about it really.

8. What makes your style different from everyone else?

Not much I think. It is something that I have begun wrestling with now that I have been working professionally for a few years now. We will have to wait and see!
