Do you Need a Mac to do Graphic Design

This is one of the questions that a lot of designers ask almost every day. It does make a lot of sense why people would be asking; do i need a mac to do graphic design? When a person goes to design school there are manly one type of computers in the school and that it is macs. You might see a PC lab every once a while.

There is the reason for this. When Steve Jobs came back to Apple he worked close with Adobe (the creator of the most popular software for creative professionals) to make sure that Adobe’s software would work a lot better on their hardware. Well it worked and really well. To the point for a long time Apple computers where the only computers in any agency or design studio. There are still some design studios that are only running on Macs and Macbooks.

Things really started to change when people who grew up on PCs started getting into the design industry. These people were not used to using a Mac and decided to not make the switch. Adobe then had to make sure that their software worked just as wall as on MAC as it did on a PC. The other big change was when Adobe released the Creative Cloud. With Creative Cloud Adobe ran into issues with trying to optimize the always updating software. This mean that each version of software on both Mac and PC perform so similar that it does not match which platform you use.

To get to the long answer; no, no you do not use a Mac for graphic design. You can use whatever platform you are comfortable or can afford. That is the worst thing about a Mac or Macbook is the price for them. When you are a starting off designer or a designer on a budget you might need to use PC just because of the price of any Apple product. Or it might be that you are not comfortable with working on a Mac, then go ahead and use a PC all day.
