Artist Talk with Petter Ramstad

1.Tell us a little About yourself.

My name is Petter, I’m a 17 year old artist. I’m currently in high school, and make drawings in my spare time. I think I’m mostly known for my pixelart.

2.Describe your style.

My pixelart is heavily inspired by 1041uuu and fei giap, it’s almost a mashup between those two. I’d say it’s calm, colorful and mundane . It’s kinda slice-of-life’y, showing parts of people’s everyday life.

3.What tools do you find yourself most the time?

For making finished work use Photoshop, but for sketches and practicing i use pencil or waterpaint.

4.What got you into pixel art?

I was experimenting with different styles at the time and found pixel art to be very fun. I got very inspired by 1041uuu and after that I just rolled with it.

5.A lot of your art seems to be based Asian architecture why is that?

I’ve always had a thing for small, cramped and detailed architecture. I like to see many small separate houses stacked on top of each other, preferably with signs all over them. And I guess you don’t really get a lot of that in western architecture. I dont know a lot about architecture, But to me it seems like western buildings tries to be very big and grandiose. Some of the Asian architecture on the other hand gives me much more of a mundane feel, which appeals more to me.

6.What is your inspiration?

Architecture, animated movies, Fei Giap, most art on pixiv, 1041uuu, studio Ghibli and slice of life. For the most part

7. What do you do when you have creative block?

Sometimes I go look at other artists or my own old art. If not i like to think of it as a good time to practice fundamentals, so I just practice anatomy or perspective or something until it’s over.

8. What is your favorite work from another artist?

カナメヲ aka. kanamewo by rapparu is my favorite work by any artist, can’t really explain why. If it would have to be a visual artist, I’d choose “shop” by Fei Giap probably

9. What tips would you give to a beginner artist?

Figure out what you like and think is fun. Experiment with lots of different styles and genres. If not you might end up having to ditch months of hard work because you figured out it was not what you wanted to do. And you shouldn’t stop experimenting, But once you found the right type of art work hard on that. Try making finished works, and when you fail at it look up reference or information on the internet on how to fix it. It can also be smart to ask for critique on forums. But most importantly have fun with it.

10. What message do you want people to get from your work?

I’m not really trying to send a message, I’m more just trying to show them work that makes them calm and happy. Personally I find art to be more about pressing peoples buttons then it’s about sending a message.

11. What makes your style different from everyone else?

Except for 1041uuu I think I’m the only one that does a really simple pixelart style. I think the lack of Anti-aliasing and simple shading differentiates my work from most other pixelart.
